Eastenders star Rita Simons says she was “horrified” after being accused of abuse for letting her deaf child have surgery to boost her hearing.
Rita, 35, and husband Theo Silveston want six-year-old daughter Maiya to have an electronic cochlear implant.
But the actress, Roxy Mitchell in BBC1 soap Eastenders, has been hurt by the angry reaction to their decision
She told Hello! magazine: “I was horrified when someone told me I was an “abuser”.
“I’d throw myself in front of a bus for my girls, yet I was being judged by someone who doesn’t understand my emotional stance.”
Rita, who said the hostility came from those who believe deafness should be embraced, wants Maiya to have the same opportunities as twin sister Jaimee, who has perfect hearing.
She added: “All we want to do is give her back what she has lost and help to expand her life.
“If you’ve got the chance to give your child the gift of sound, why would you not do that?”
“We know it’s not a miracle cure and her hearing won’t be perfect.
“But, in time her brain will process what it is hearing and compensate, making sounds more familiar to her.”
