CORONATION Street favourite Kym Marsh looks set to become the next landlady of the Rovers Return.
The move would put Kym, who plays Michelle Connor, right at the heart of the drama. And it secures her position as one of the soap world’s biggest and most loved stars.
Speaking about her new contract, mum-of-three Kym, 36, who is believed to be getting £180,000 a year for her role, said: “I have just signed for another year so I’m not going anywhere.
“I have such an amazing time. We have such a laugh. We are such a welcoming cast – I remember when I joined. It sounds a cliché but we really are one big happy family.”
More than ten million viewers tuned in to watch the famous boozer go up in flames. Its current landlady is Stella Price, played by Michelle Collins, 51.
But Stella is unaware that it was her twisted ex-lover Karl Munro who started the fire. The climax of that storyline later this year could well lead to a new landlady.
An ITV insider said : “You really don’t get bigger than becoming the landlady of the Rovers Return – and that’s what they’ve been talking about with Kym.
“Along with boyfriend Steve McDonald they really would be the perfect couple to run the pub. But when it re-opens it’s very much Stella at the helm with her mum Gloria working side by side.
“They get through the crisis together and the pub goes from strength to strength. There have been discussions about handing the keys over to Michelle and Steve.”
Stella nearly died in the fire, which has already claimed the life of one firefighter and has left Sunita Alahan fighting for her life in hospital.
“Stella could quite possibly decide enough is enough and Michelle and Steve would be the perfect replacement,” said the source. “Everyone reckons Kym would make a terrific landlady.
“Her character is strong, feisty and sexy. And, of course, she has plenty of bar experience.
“She’s got some big storylines coming up and she is going to be heavily involved in her son Ryan’s relationship with young mum Katy Armstrong.”
It is believed there will be a number of power struggles at the factory where Michelle is the assistant manager.
“There was no way the soap’s bosses were going to let her go anywhere, they’ve got too many big things planned for her,” the insider added.
