A UNIQUE GLIMPSE INTO THE PRIVATE WORLD OF PRIME MINISTER MRS THATCHER
MARGARET THATCHER AND DAUGHTER D.I.Y
Bank holiday weekend, May 1984 and like thousands of others at this time it’s D.I.Y for the Thatchers.
Mrs Thatcher spent 6 hours helping to paint and decorate daughter Carol’s new home – and end of terrace house in south west London.
For her it is not a chore, it is a relaxation. Five years after she became Prime Minister she finds DIY one of the few ways left of turning off from her problems for a day.
” When you are decorating you have to concentrate totally. You don’t have time to think of anything else. At the end of the day I feel tired but completely refreshed mentally.”
Maggie had become the family’s acknowledged DIY expert.
No sooner had she walked into Carol’s new home than she was telling her off for not preparing the rooms properly.
” If we don’t get it right every DIY expert will be criticising us, ” she said.
Their closeness was evident as they worked away together. Mum giving advice, Carol, taking in the bits she wanted to, glad that mum was there to help transform the chaos into order.
