It was the day that Oona King and her Italian husband, Tiberio Santomarco, dreamed might never come to pass. After the agonising weeks and months when Tullio, their first biological child, had fought to overcome his traumatic entry into the world and the potential catalogue of life-limiting conditions that followed, the doctors sat down with his anxious parents.
‘At the beginning of June,’ says Oona, 46, ‘we were finally told Tullio had passed his last neurological test with flying colours. After all the heartache, our handsome baby boy had been given the all-clear. In fact, they said he has a beautiful brain: they showed us the scans.’
And her expressive face is suffused by a radiant smile. ‘He’d been a miracle child and then, for us, he turned into a tragedy child. But now he’s back to full-on miracle mode. Long may that remain.’
